Tal R





”Disse værker er som krystaller, visuelle landskaber”, udtaler Tal R. ”Lag for lag, der vokser over flere år”. Kunstneren beskriver derudover sine værker som grådige. For uanset, hvor meget materiale han fodrer dem med, vil kollagerne kun udsende et lille tilfredst smil og derefter kalde på mere. 

"These works are like crystals, visual landscapes", Tal R says. "Layer upon layer, that grow over several years". The artist further describes his works as greedy. No matter how much material he feeds to them, they will only send out a little satisfied smile and then call for more.

The food awakening

So, I have been meaning to post about this article from Information for a while but haven't gotten around to it, which means the article itself is pretty old news, but the issue debated is very much alive and kicking.

The article is about how consciousness about food and diet is reaching almost religious proportions in our part of the world, with health experts (whatever that is) attaining guru-like status with everything that entails in terms of fanatic followers and fame.


A friend of my parents, who is a professor of physiology in Würtzburg, says that most scientific research about the long term effects of certain foods on our well-being can at best serve as guide lines due to their lack of falsifiability. New results and thereby altered views on what is recommended will pop up constantly, leaving the consumers frustrated and inclined towards writing off every bit of advise and ‘this just in!’ news about living healthily, and with good reason!


Still, the sheer amount of statistics and lived experience pointing towards for instance milk not being the necessary staple in a balanced diet, promising healthy bones and many other benefits, it was thought to be, is staggering. 


Conversely, despite Denmark being the most milk drinking nation in the world, the number of osteoporosis sufferers among the population is among the highest globally.


Denmark is a country that relies heavily on our farmers and agricultural products, and vice versa, and we are also the only ones being recommended half a litre of milk daily, throughout our lives, this advice being breastfed to us (pun intended) from all sides during our upbringing.

Milk is liquid health! - we are told, and all research saying otherwise will be hushed up, whereas the girl who discovered slimming benefits from including dairy products in most meals was given a prize.


It is then interesting that if you google for instance: ‘don’t drink your milk’, an entirely different type of results will appear. It will show to be proven that milk ranks at the very top of the list of allergenic foods, causing diarrhea, cramps, acne, bloatedness and skin rashes. Cows milk is the main reason for most ear infections in young children and has been linked to with for instance insulin demanding diabetes, leukemia and infertility. For instance Japanese women, who gets virtually no dairy but instead loads of fish, good fats and vegetables, have much longer life spans and very few cases of brittle bone problems and breast cancer. Though when the come to Europe and eat like we do their decease patterns change and become like ours. I know that numerous factors will play a role in how long a persons life span will be, but still I see the difference as so vast, it must be worth an investigation.


If nature intended for us to drink milk throughout our lives, our breasts would probably be different. Not to mention the cows, who were also just meant to feed their calves once a year but are now forced to deliver several times a day causing the quality of the milk to suffer and leading to infections and other complications the bacteria from which end up in our precious milk, yum! 


To get back to the topic of the article (finally - sorry) it, in relation to this new food awakening, mentions ‘the new eating disorder’, ortorexia, whose sufferers will become so obsessive about what they eat, they will bring their own container of food to social events and have panic attacks if they “sin” (ugh! - another pet peeve of mine: people who call eating beautiful delicious food ‘sinning’! Sickening.)


This condition is of course to be taken dead seriously. I have myself many times wondered if I, with all my health freakish lifestyle and the fact that i have actually read most of the books mentioned in the article, am borderline ortorexic, or more, but I believe I have been able to keep the balance.


Fanatism in all shapes and forms is of course more dangerous than any refined sugar ladden diet. 


Also, an important aspect is that many people will be perfectly fine eating a varied and balanced diet, having just what they feel like from all food categories, and some people will even thrive on a diet consisting of old cheese, red wine, cigarettes and double espressos till they die of old age, but then again, many others won’t.


Few other subjects can bring out peoples rage as much as food related discussions, people being threatened on their childhood teachings and safe convictions about what is good or bad for them. People who are not ready or interested will get annoyed and often angry, if anybody is to give them well meant advise. 

Which is also why I hate to discuss food, unless someone else asks or brings it up themselves (plus the subject is immensely boring).


But it IS a problem how we eat, and a problem that costs the society billions of our own money.


The Information article focuses on some important aspects of the problem, but in my view what is written bares witness to the journalist not having read the books in question, but only responding to the critique of them by the health authorities, which is natural, and of course still not stating anything new, but just repeating their old dusty outdated recommendations once again, as doing otherwise would be dangerous! After all, it is their whole reliability and the interest of the farmers/politicians at stake here!


Ninka Bernadette Mouritzon, whose book ‘Kernesund familie -sådan!’ was mentioned in the article, has written about how her whole family got healthier and happier from simple changes in what they ate, and if your children, as her own did before these changes, show symptoms such as autism, aggression, apathy, chronic colds etc. etc., it may be worth trying a different diet. 

She is not, as it sounds judging from the article, saying that every child should be forbidden to have milk.

Bottomline, the conclusion to all this is of course that people do need to take responsibility of their lives and ‘bodily temples’. If that is the case, nobody has to become upset when someone tells them about any new fad popping up. Nobody likes the annoying health apostle.


I know this sounds generic, but I really just wanted to finish this far to long post with saying that the only person who can speak for you and know how it feels best to live your life, is yourself.

Edit: This article is a lot more sober and well funded. 

The writer's view on this particular book is the same as the before mentioned: that you shouldn't force advice on a whole society, just because your own family life has improved, which can also be partly due to hightened levels of consciousness about your life in general, plus exercise, but I would still claim that the statements of 'Kernesund familie.." are not that square and set in stone.     


Edit, edit: I've changed my mind. I don't think there is anything wrong with writing a book in the way Ninka has done. People can, like with everything else, take it or leave it, and it's not as if it would be a good effect, had she written a book that was one long disclaimer. 

Oh noes


HAHAAA - This is where the 'no regrets' mantra is really put to good use.
This must be the dumbest, yet at the same time the most courageous thing I've seen in a while.

Though, the sad thing is - what is left for parody?

so underrated

At the polterabend I went to this weekend, we sumo-wrestled! So. Much. Fun. - and a lot tougher than I would have thought, probably partly due to my not being able to stop laughing so hard, I was high on endorphines for hours.

If anyone has never tried this before, as I hadn't till this saturday, you win by throwing the opponent down and yourself on top. Easy and simple, my kind of rules exactly.

Michael Cera

Even though it took me two rounds of watching only a few minutes of Superbad, then choking so hard on dick-jokes it made me press stop, I eventually started watching it with my nieces and suddenly I was the one laughing the most. Now I've seen it at least three times and the added pleasure of that, is knowing it well enough to most of the time just enjoy the reactions of the people I see it with.
The acting is just perfect, and Michael Cera in particular I find unique, I love his underplayed style to bits. 
This behind the scenes program I saw enhanced my viewing pleasure of especially the scene where he has to run from the police officer, who is also co-director of the film. He confided on this show that Michael runs like a gazelle and has the weirdest style of running, so the part where the officer stops and totally out of breath expresses his amazement at this freak-fast kid is only half fictional. 
Notice, if you get the chance, how his legs swing almost outwards in a sort of circular movement. 
Cera himself couldn't see what the fuss was all about, "That is just how I run" he mumbled, with the usual half-baffled charm. 
Yeah it is! .. and don't change a thing

Økologi og sult

Økologi er en del af løsningen

Fødevarekrisen rammer hårdt, både i maven og i hjertet

Nogle forskere og politikere bruger desværre fødevarekrisen til at trække deres egne dagsordener frem. De ønsker at bruge mere gødning, opdyrke naturarealer og bruge gensplejsede afgrøder. Økologisk jordbrug er også blevet kaldt ”luksus” og ”asocial” fordi den giver lidt lavere udbytte i Europa, sammenlignet med intensivt konventionelt landbrug. Men hvis udryddelse af sult kun var et spørgsmål om højere produktion i de industrialiserede lande, var sult udryddet for længst.

Det der er behov for er at styrke bæredygtig fødevareproduktion i verdens fattigste lande. Dyrkning af intensive monokulturer svækker jordens frugtbarhed og øger den fattige bondes afhængighed af kunstgødning og sprøjtegift til skade for lokal bæredygtighed. Nyere forskning viser, at bønder i de fattigste afrikanske lande kan fordoble og i nogle tilfælde tredoble udbyttet med hjælp fra økologiske landbrugsteknikker. Derfor har FNs fødevareorganisation FAO også peget på økologisk landbrug som et positivt redskab i udviklingen af den forsømte landbrugssektor i verdens Ulande.

Økologisk jordbrug er en del af løsningen, ikke en del af problemet. Det giver højere udbytter og mere mad på bordet, lige der, hvor der er behov for det.

På denne side har vi forsøgt at samle viden og holdninger fra de mange danske og udenlandske forskere, som har arbejdet med økologisk landbrug i ulandene. God læselyst.

We have been such domestic-godesses this week growing bean sprouts and such - must be the spring - and I made my own muesli. 

It is so simple it almost seems ridiculous to post, but still thought I'd share. 
I love that you can add whatever you like to home-made muesli, and that it is cheaper than buying the ready made stuff that gets old and dry quickly. 
Plus you don't have to suffer the dried bananas. I HATE dried bananas.

Mine is very tasty, healthy, and gluten free if you have problems with that:

quinoa flakes 
millet flakes
coconut flakes 
hazelnuts
brazilnuts
walnuts
almonds
sunflowerseeds
pumpkinseeds
raisins
dried cranberries
dried apricots

Chop the nuts as finely as desired, I like mine chunky, and slowly heat them in a frying pan, taking care not to burn them, as that will destroy their good fatty acids.

Do the same to the quinoa and the millet, that makes them taste less dusty and brings out their flavour.

Chop the dried fruits and blend everything.

I like leaving the portion I would like for breakfast in the fridge soaked in soy milk over night, but that is my little quirk, many people would dislike the soppiness, I'm quite sure.

Next time I'll try and come up with a completely different mixture. Perhaps with some home-made pineapple chips, or somefink?

Oh-bama

She's got the ovaries!

Today I heard the expression "She's got the ovaries to..", as in.. instead of balls 

I'm speechless. Can't figure out if it is the dumbest neo-feminist piece of ridiculousness or if it's my new favourite exclamation that I have to fit in somewhere in my utterings at least once a day. 

At least I know that I like the bold reference to this usually near-holy part of the womanly body. Men will probably take it the same way they handle seeing a tampax sticking out from your handbag, but see THAT is where I get a bit feminist. As soon as men have something that women can demand hidden because it will otherwise make them queasy, even though it is completely natural, unavoidable, painful, annoying and expensive, then maybe I will respect their viewpoint on our most womanly of bits.     

I had my first organic strawberries this year today and they were blissfully delightfully good. I know they have been flown halfway around the world, so totally not ecofriendly, but the kind lady at Irma let me have them for five kroner because a single one was mushy, and I couldn't resist. I seriously appreciated every little red dream in the packet, and that and the fact that it was still too warm for wearing a jacket after my yoga class, just made this through and through good day even better.
All evening I kept wanting to read on in the great book I'm devouring at the moment by Iain Pears, but I was stuck on the internet partly due to a commentary thread on this picture of Amy Winehouse and her gigantic ice lolly. I know I'm silly, the girl is doing a great job trying to put her skinny bee-hived body in the grave like she was determined not to see another christmas, but I actually worry about her and don't want her to go. In this picture she looks better than she has done for ages, and the comments were so amusing it uplifted me even more. Do check them out, they get funnier and funnier.

Jezebel.com is my guilty pleasure. Maybe it's due to us not having a television anymore, sometimes, okay often, I need some perfectly no-brain entertainment, and this site is spot on for just that.

The terrifying new speed of global warming and our last chance to stop it

RECORD HEAT and wind and fire displace nearly one million Southern Californians. Record drought in Atlanta leaves the city with just a few more months of drinking water. Arctic ice shrinks by an area twice the size of Texas in one summer. And all over the world—including where you live—the local weather borders on unrecognizable. It’s way too hot, too dry, too wet, too weird wherever you go.

All of which means it’s time to face a fundamental truth: the majority of the world’s climate scientists have been totally wrong. They’ve failed us completely. Not concerning the basics of global warming. Of course the climate is changing. Of course humans are driving the process through fossil fuel combustion and deforestation. No, what the scientists have been wrong about—and I mean really, really wrong—is the speed at which it’s all occurring. Our climate system isn’t just “changing.” It’s not just “warming.” It’ssnapping, violently, into a whole new regime right before our eyes. A fantastic spasm of altered weather patterns is crashing down upon our heads right now.

The only question left for America is this: can we snap along with the climate? Can we, as the world’s biggest polluter, create a grassroots political uprising that emerges as abruptly as a snap of the fingers? A movement that demands the clean-energy revolution in the time we have left to save ourselves?

Dansk Folkepartis Burka-annoncer og efterfølgende forslag om, at muslimer, der vil opnå dansk statsborgerskab, skal afsværge dele af Koranen, markerer et højdepunkt i partiets hensynsløse diskriminering af et mindretal af danske borgere og er dermed et anslag mod den sameksistens og den samhørighed, som så mange gode kræfter overalt i landet har skabt og prøver at skabe.

Vi vender os mod den åbenlyse fjendtlighed, som partiets seneste udspil er udtryk for. Vi anser den farlig og destruktiv, fordi den sætter dybe skel i befolkningen. Det danske samfund har ikke siden trediverne oplevet tilsvarende hetz - og slet ikke fra et stort, indflydelsesrigt parti.

Vi er os fuldt bevidst, at Danmark er i sigtekornet for terrorisme, og at terror skal bekæmpes med alle til rådighed stående lovlige midler, men Dansk Folkeparti har med den seneste optrapning af sine aktiviteter dramatisk næret den på en gang aggressive og frygtsomme offentlige stemning, som den i forvejen har været med til at skabe, og som i sidste ende netop avler terrorisme.

Der er kun en vej frem: At den enkelte borger får de bedste muligheder for at acceptere de forskelligheder, som et moderne europæisk samfund i en turbulent tid uvægerligt kommer til at rumme. Det er en stor opgave, der påhviler alle. Dansk Folkeparti arbejder målbevidst på at gøre det sværere. I sidste instans umuligt.

Det kan komme til at koste dyrt.

Oh, how this would be perfect for the wedding I'm invited to - the first I've attended where the couple taking the leap into christian wedding bond are my close friends, and my own age. A bit unsettling, actually.

L'Air du Temps dress at the MET, NY - Even though it is not visible here, the rough edged ruffles are apparently multiple shades of grey. The thing with me is that this vision has a quite different effect on me than I suppose was intended. I Just want to lie in them! Just like looking down at clouds from an airplane makes me feel.

For jer som orker læse det

Mine 'vidnesbyrd' om oplevelserne på Nørrebro med Gil & Moti:

Gil & Moti - ‘Available for You’

af en praktikant hos Kunsthallen Nikolaj.


Forårssolen varmede da Gil & Moti, og jeg med kamera om halsen, stævnede ud fra Kunsthallen Nikolaj denne fredag formiddag i april. Forventningen kunne mærkes, nu skulle vi efter lang tids forberedelse møde de mennesker ‘Available for You’-projektet skal dreje sig om.


Nørrebrogade var i færd med at vågne da vi stillede cyklerne, og den første butik vi gik ind i, en stor forretning med islamisk tøj og tilbehør, var mennsketom, da ejeren var ved at rigge stativer til på gaden foran. 

Han smilede forsigtigt, da Gil, for første gang ud af hvad der skulle blive mange, forklarede hvad han og Moti er her for: “Vi er kunstnere, oprindeligt fra Israel, som er her for at arbejde med herboende arabere. Vi står til rådighed for dig, så hvis du har brug for hjælp med noget, det kan være hvad som helst lige fra at hjælpe til i butikken med hvad der falder for, eller gå til hånde hjemme hos dig med hverdagssyslerne, hvad som helst der passer dig. Vi er til rådighed. Det eneste vi forventer til gengæld er, at vi får lov at dokumentere det på billeder eller video, og udstille det i Kunsthallen Nikolaj.” 

Sælgeren virkede usikker på hvordan han skulle reagere, og så lidt spørgende på mig. Jeg havde helst set at dialogen foregik mellem Gil & Moti og dem de opsøgte, men det virkede som om, han manglede noget bekræftelse i, at han ikke blev taget ved næsen. Hans engelske var muligvis også beskedent, for han så lettet ud, da jeg kort forklarede på dansk hvad Gil lige havde sagt. Det kom dog hurtigt frem, at han ikke var ejeren af butikken, og at han foretrak, at vi kom igen en dag hvor hans arbejdsgiver var til stede, forklarede jeg Gil &Moti. 

Vi lagde an til at lade ham komme videre med sit arbejde, men da jeg sagde tak på arabisk, vækkedes hans interesse pludselig, og vi udvekslede lidt på mit beskedne sprog. Det kom frem at han var palæstinenser, hvilket gjorde ham til første repræsentant for den gruppe, jeg havde haft størst ængstelighed ved mødet med. I det lys opfattede jeg hans reaktion som endnu mere afslappet og fordomsfri, for på trods af sin generthed havde han ikke løftet et øjenbryn ved oplysningen om Gil & Motis afstamning. 


Vi gik ned af gaden, og det at vi gik afsted med søgende interesserede blikke, gjorde at folk blev opmærksomme på os. Selvom Gil & Moti er et særsyn i sig selv, klædt identisk og ikke udpræget danske at se på, er jeg sikker på, at butiksejerne, der stod lænet op ad deres facader, og de øvrige forbipasserende ikke ville have studeret os lige så indgående hvis vi blot havde set ud som om vi havde en bestemt destination, og naturligt nok. For det var selvfølgelig klart for enhver at vi havde noget for, og alene det gjorde, at selv jeg, der ofte kommer på de kanter, og har en nær veninde der en overgang boede i nr. 102, præcis hvor vi var, havde en følelse af at være på besøg, og se det hele med nye øjne.


Efter kort tid gik vi ind i en shawarmabar, og dette skulle blive dagens mest voldsomme reaktion på vores visit. I løbet af Gils talestrøm ændredes manden bag diskens ansigtsudtryk til en blanding af vantro og afsky, Han afbrød Gil med rasende udbrud, der kom bag på os alle tre i deres voldsomme og afmægtige vrede. “What kind of people are you! How dare you come here in my shop, you are the reason I have to live in this country, you have my land! Get out!”. Vi bakkede forskrækkede ud med sviende blikke efter os, og trak lidt op mod runddelen inden vi så på hinanden. Jeg var noget rystet, og bange, for at sige det ligeud. Kunne ikke lade være med at spejde ned ad gaden. Gil & Moti var også påvirkede, og udtrykte at det er den stærkeste reaktion de hidtil har haft. De har lavet kontroversielle og grænseafsøgende projekter i alle dele af verden, men alligevel var denne situation den voldsomste. Det synes jeg er ganske tankevækkende. De var dog fuldkommen fattede, og vi brugte et par minutter, mest på at tale mig til ro, fordi jeg fik sagt at jeg oprigtigt talt var bange. Både Gil og Moti gav udtryk for at de sagtens kan forstå hans reaktion. De er på ingen måde stolte af Israels ageren i verden, og har jo deres grunde til at have boet i Holland de sidste 10 år. Det tankevækkende var dette fulstændigt ukontrollable had, der gjorde at denne mand fik tårer i øjnene af raseri over synet af to eksilisraelere, der tilbyder ham deres hjælp kvit og frit. 

For mig der lever i dette beskyttede land, som aldrig har oplevet sorg der jævner mig med jorden eller umenneskelige uretfærdigheder begået koldblodigt overfor mig selv eller mine nærmeste, var det ærefrygtindgydende. Jeg kunne godt lide at vide hvad der efterfølgende gik igennem hans hoved. Da vi var vel ude af butikken, havde han da en følelse af tilfredsstillelse over at have sat os på plads? Eller kunne han, da vreden havde lagt sig, godt se at disse to fyre bestemt ikke rangerede højt på listen over de folk han kunne bebrejde for tingenes tilstand? Det får jeg sandsynligvis aldrig at vide, selvom vi over frokosten talte om, at Gil & Moti muligvis vil se ham igen senere i forløbet, og denne gang efter at have hjulpet flere mennesker han kender eller kender til, med forretninger på Nørrebrogade, og de håbede på at der så senere kunne dukke en lejlighed op til forsoning.


For vi fik mange vidt forskellige reaktioner, og flere var overraskende og glædeligt positive. Allerede ved frokosttid havde Gil & Moti flere løse aftaler med interesserede og åbne butiksansatte og -indehavere om at komme igen, og konkret aftale med en frisør om at komme og hjælpe med at gøre rent i hans salon samt med en grønthandler om at hjælpe til i butikken med at pakke kasser ud op til åbning. 

Særligt mødet med grønthandleren var lovende. Denne store prægtige libaneser, Nasr hed han, var munter og åben, jokede om politiken som han ikke ville tale om, men alligevel bragte op selv, og kunne næsten ikke tro sit held: “You want to do my work, while I videotape it?! Alright!” Det eneste vi måtte love ham var, at vi ikke ville vise det på israelsk TV, for så ville han få problemer med at rejse hjem til det betændte område i Sydlibanon som han havde forladt for tyve år siden. Han nævnte dog, at han mange gange har besøgt Israel på ferierejser, og imponerede ved at kunne sige nogle sætninger på hebraisk. “Israeli people live in this area, and we speak together. Yeah, no problem.”


En første dag “i felten” med mange indtryk, og selvom Gil & Moti fulgte mig til cyklen flere timer inden jeg havde regnet med at min arbejdsdag var omme, for at gå rundt på egen hånd og tage billeder og tænke videre på projektet, var jeg helt flad. 


Den næste gang jeg tog med på Nørrebro blev torsdag, og altså næsten en uge senere. I mellemtiden var der sket en masse, Gil & Moti havde blandt andet været i grønthandlen og hjælpe Nasr, i Salon Cairo og gøre rent, dokumenteret det hele samt klippet materialet sammen til videoer og slideshows  og føjet dem til udstillingen i Tårnrummet.

Siden de landede i Kastrup har de på den måde været i gang og beskæftiget med projektet i alle vågne timer, og deres energi og overskud imponerer mig. Deres liv former sig markant anderledes end de fleste andres, og de har måttet fravælge en masse sider af tilværelsen som jeg ville kvie mig ved at undvære. En regenererende søndag, som jeg kan trænge til at bruge på avislæsning, blogsurfning, en yogatime og anden adspredelse, er der ikke, og bliver der ikke tid til for Gil & Moti det næste lange stykke tid. Alligevel er de lutter smil og positivitet, hele tiden, og en fornøjelse at være sammen med. 


Vi havde ikke megen tid denne eftermiddag, og cyklede derfor med det samme hen til Nasrs grønthandel. Han hilste varmt, og gav udtryk for stor tilfredshed med weekendens indsats. Gil spurgte ham, hvad han mente om, at de næste gang de kommer medbringer et tv-hold fra TV2, og den umiddelbare reaktion var lidt forbeholden, men Nasr endte med at give efter med et: “Everything for you guys”. 

Det næste stop var Mohammeds tæppe- og husartikelforretning, hvor Gil & Moti skal indrette et rum i butikken, og blandt andet bygge et møbel som bedst muligt udstiller kufferter og andre varer. Vi blev budt på Fanta af en smilende Mohammad, som var tydeligt spændt og glædeligt overrasket over de medbragte skitser. Han virker dog stadig genert, og havde ikke lyst til at TV skulle komme hos ham. Trods Gils argumenter om god reklame for butikken, lod han sig ikke overbevise, og han slog fast, at nu havde de fået lov til at dokumentere som de havde lyst til med kamera og film, men ved medier trak han grænsen. Han viste dog sin store tillid, ved at foreslå at de kunne få nøglen til butikken og arbejde på egen hånd uden for åbningstid. 

Da Gil & Moti for en stund var nedenunder for at få overblik over det laggerrum de skal stuve varerne ned i mens de gør rummet klar til at de igen kan komme på plads i nye omgivelser, sagde Mohammed ting til mig på dansk, som jeg næsten var ked af at Gil & Moti ikke hørte fra ham selv. “Hvis bare alle var som de her to, varme og venlige, så ville vi ikke have blod i gaden og deprimerende aviser. Projekter som det her er hvad verden har brug for”. Større ros kan man vel ikke ønske sig.


Gil og Moti skulle arbejde i Salon Cairo for anden gang kl fem, så vi kunne lige nå en kop kaffe med en pige jeg kender, som uddanner sig til dokumentarist, og som er blevet meget interesseret i projektet. Først og fremmest ønskede hun blot at høre mere og møde Gil & Moti, men efterfølgende havde hun tænkt at der måske var basis for et dokumentarprogram, hvori man fulgte projektets forløb. Jeg er ikke sikker på at jeg fik formidlet mødet på en særlig smart måde, og det gik for sent rigtigt op for mig, at projektet ikke har brug for endnu et kamera. Ideen med et dokumentarprogram var god, men skulle i så fald nok have været indledt tidligere. Derfor kunne jeg ikke lade være med at sidde tilbage med en følelse af at have været skyld i en lidt kedelig situation, hvor interesserne på begge sider, på trods af al god vilje, var for forskellige til at bære frugt lige i den her sammenhæng. Der var dog ingen misstemning da vi igen skiltes, og jeg trøstede mig med, at Gil & Moti er så vant til at skulle forklare deres projekt til alle mulige mennesker, inklusiv repræsentanter for pressen, og at min veninde er vant til at prøve ideer af for at se om de kunne fungere. Hun fortalte mig senere, at det for hende både havde været et lærerigt men også et lidt foruroligende møde, fordi hun selv er konservatorieuddannet sanger og altid har været irriteret over mediernes evne til at pille kunsten fra hinanden og hive den ned på et stade hvor man næsten ikke kender den igen. Nu oplevede hun så pludselig at hun, i kraft af sin nye uddannelse, pludselig fandt sig selv med den anden kasket på. Hun kunne ikke lide at se sig selv stille de samme nærgående, matter-of-fact-agtige spørgsmål hun selv før i tiden havde fundet så unødvendige, og det havde for hende været en påmindelse om så vidt muligt at holde sig fri af den tilgang og at bibeholde sin sensitivitet over for emnet hun skulle behandle.


Efter en lang bededagsweekend befandt vi os igen ved runddelen, ventende på at en journalist og en kameramand fra tv2 skulle møde os. De var flinke og åbne, og umiddelbart virkede kontakten lovende. De ville gerne, til en indledning, filme Gil & Moti, mens de delte flyere ud ved runddelen, og de fik hurtigt flere scener i kassen med interessede af begge køn, som fik forklaret projektet og gik videre med en flyer. De verbale reaktioner kunne jeg ikke høre, da jeg måtte holde mig et stykke væk uden for kameraets rækkevidde. 


Nasr var blevet forberedt på hele holdets ankomst, inklusiv tv-folkene, og da vi gik over til ham, gik vi ud fra at alt var fint, og at vi kunne give tv-folkene det, de var blevet lovet. En tid gik med filmning af “ankomsten” og af Gil & Moti der lagde varer på plads. 

Derefter skulle Nasr interviewes. Han sagde gode, skarpe og fornuftige ting som svar på Svends spørgsmål, som drejede sig meget om det at Gil & Moti var israelere. Han sagde, at han ikke havde haft problemer, for eksempel i forhold til sine kunder, med det at have to israelere gående i sin butik. Han så dem som mennesker og kunstnere, og det var hvad der betød noget for ham, og mente desuden at det var et nyttigt og meningsfuldt projekt til at få skabt dialog, bygget bro, osv. 


Jeg havde netop nået at glæde mig over, at interviewet blev så vellykket, da han blev bedt om at gentage et spørgsmål, som kameramanden ikke var sikker på at have fået ordentligt med, og da var det, som om han pludselig blev klar over, at det skulle på tv, og ikke bare bruges i udstillingsøjemed. Han afbrød interviewet, og sagde at han beklagede, men at de ikke kunne bruge det, han havde sagt. Han var bange for sin forretning, og sine muligheder for at rejse frit i mellemøsten, og bad indtrængende om, ikke at måtte være nødt til at føle sig skidt tilpas over at måtte sige fra. Han mente at han fra starten havde sat grænsen ved medier, hvilket jeg kan bevidne, men som Gil & Moti troede han havde givet efter over for, da de flere gange har spurgt om, fået ja til, og oven i købet ringet en sidste gang samme morgen for at bekræfte, at tv2 måtte komme. Tv-folkene var fuldt forstående, men også lidt ærgerlige da de, ligesom vi, havde glædet sig over at Nasr ville være med til at skabe en modvinkel, på det stof de var vant til at indsamle på Nørrebro. 

Vi gik tilbage til runddelen for at interviewe Gil & Moti i stedet. På et tidspunkt kom et par teenagedrenge helt tæt på og stod længe og var nysgerrige, så Gil gav dem en flyer hver. Jeg nåede at tænke over, om de mon gerne ville lave lidt rask ballede, fordi de havde set kameraet og måden Gil & Moti ser ud på, men de gik pludselig igen med et “hej-hej”. 

I løbet af interviewet reagerede Moti voldsomt. Han var berørt over at han følte Svend lagde ord i deres mund, og forvanskede projektet i forhold til dets reelle formål. Svends spørgsmål lød eksempelvis i retning af: “Hvorfor har i valgt at arbejde med arabere, og hvad betyder det at i er israelere? Hvorfor tror i Nasr ikke ville have bragt interviewet? Hvad er folk i området bange for?” osv., og var derfor selvfølgelig politisk vinklede. Man kan godt forstå, at han har valgt en politisk tilgang til denne yderst politiske sag, bl.a fordi pressemeddelelsen antyder at projektet er ment som en forsoningsgestus, men fra Gil og Motis synspunkt kommer dette, og med rette, til at fremstå som om Svend Rasmussen blot var ude efter en juicy historie, og de var opbragte over interviewets tematisering. Begge parters udgangspunkter var derfor fuldt forståelige, men alligevel ikke forenelige. 


Vi gik derefter ned til Salon Cairo for at filme hos Al-Zaiim, som intet havde imod kameraet. Det eneste problem her var, at Al-Zaiim danske var meget dårligt, og at han derfor misforstod de fleste af de spørgsmål han blev stillet. Spørgsmålene var heller ikke denne gang grænseoverskridende, men umiskendeligt rettede mod israeler-problematikken.


Vi fulgtes endnu en gang til runddelen, hvor Gil & Moti talte med Svend om deres næste tjenester, og om de eventuelt kunne bære et tv-hold, men endte med at aftale at tales ved. Jeg kunne mærke på Gil & Moti at de stadig var meget berørte over udfaldet af dagens møde med landsdækkende dansk tv. De mente at Svend havde håndteret Nasr, på en forkert, ufølsom og alt for journalistagtig måde, og at dette var skyld i at Nasr havde svigtet dem. Mit indtryk var, at Nasr faktisk var blevet nervøs og med god grund, fordi dette for ham ikke blot ganske enkelt handler om at deltage i et kunstprojekt, men er blodig alvor. Han kan risikere, ikke bare at hans forretning og levebrød lider skade, men også afstedkomme andre store personlige omkostninger. Det forstår Gil & Moti selvfølgelig udemærket, men de havde alligevel håbet på at der var en chance for at eksponere sagen fra en ny og positiv vinkel i projektets regi.


I forhold til Svends vinkling synes jeg han, taget sin profession og funktion i betragtning, var ordentlig, og selvom han øjnede en chance for virkelig at skabe et værdifuldt indlæg i den danske debat om problemer både på nørrebro og omkring politik og integration generelt, pressede han ikke på eller blev upassende. Det er klart at et indslag om ‘Available for You’ absolut ikke bør dreje sig om uroligheder på Nørrebro og samfundsproblemer generelt, men det synes jeg heller ikke var problemet.

Muligvis kan problemerne og misforståelserne i hvert fald delvist forklares ved, at Gil & Moti ikke er så indforståede med hvilke medier der spiller hvilken rolle, da de kun har været i Danmark så kort tid, men dette er samtidig en stor del af, hvad der berettiger og gør projektet interessant,. Det muliggør at ‘Available for You’ har den uskyld som spiller en rolle for dets status som kunst. I forhold til medierne medfører dette paradoks bare at forholdet til de sensationsstyrede journalister bliver noget af en balanceakt.

Derfor kan man forstå begge sider af sagen, inklusiv at kunstnerne er bange for at få deres projekt forvansket, og måske må konklusionen på det hele nødvendigvis være, at hvis Gil & Moti vil undgå at deres projekt bliver udlagt som politisk og Nørrebro-relateret, er det sandsynligvis nødvendigt helt at holde sig væk fra tv nyhedsmediet, som laver halvandet-minut indlæg med tre statements og en fængende overskrift, hvilket udgør en for stor risiko for, at det gode projekt bliver forvansket.


Det glæder mig at de i morgen skal have en kunstjournalist fra Politiken med ud i et privat hjem, hvilket jeg tror på mange måder vil fungere meget mere hensigtsmæssigt for alle parter.

Gil & Moti


Today is the last day of my internship at Kunsthallen Nikolaj (Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center), which has all in all been no less than great. 

Such an inspiring and learningful experience, that has made me long for getting out in 'the soup' when I finish my studies. Don't get me wrong, I love studying, and am grateful for the student life possible in Denmark. But still I am anticipating working with something that will produce more than grades more and more each day.

Everybody at Kunsthallen Nikolaj have been fantastic, and it has been sad saying goodbye today.

If anybody is interested, here is a beautifully written article from Information (- in its own words 'the least sucky' and in mine the best Danish newspaper) on the artists i have been assistant to, and the project they are doing in Copenhagen. 

I love the angle Sandra Boss has taken on the matter, and she manages to bring out some new aspects as opposed to the more shallow and predictable one from Politiken.

Toilet cleaning as artistic conflict broker


At the moment two identically clad Israeli men run around in Nørrebro performing favours for people with Arabic background. They scrub floors, polish windows and babysit children - all as part of an art-project that is exhibited at Kunsthallen Nikolaj (Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center).


ART PROJECT

They are wearing completely identical clothes. The same glasses. And the same little dark ponytail sticking out from on top of the back of the head.


The twin-look is the uniform of the Israeli artist duo Gil & Moti, which they wear running around in Nørrebro at the moment, offering favours to inhabitants with Arabic background. The favours consist of a variety of things, ranging from for example cleaning, babysitting and window polishing to carpentry work.


The free favours are recorded on video and exhibited as part of their performative and site specific project ‘Available for You’ that is shown on television screens at Kunsthallen Nikolaj in the heart of Copenhagen.


As they sit there in the lunch room of the art center, they stand out as a caricatured version of the kind of married couples who over the course of time have fallen into such a deeply symbiotic relationship that a distinction between personalities appears meaningless. But the two middle aged men take their identical appearance seriously. They say that they are dressed identically at all times and that they are always together. They are married, live and work together and attend the same activities, they say. “We have built a common identity to challenge the myth of the ego. To share an ego is a constant state of negotiation, and it is this negotiation that we have made our life project,” says one part of the duo, after which the other part takes over:


“We wish to make people think of identity as a room where agreements must be met and peace has to be developed.”


Toilet cleaning

Gil & Moti’s private lifestyle is reflected in their works that evolve around reconciliation and understanding between the two well known belligerents: Israel and Palestine.


In Nørrebro it is also this conflict that the two artists base their work upon. By doing favours for people with Arabic background in this area of Copenhagen, they wish to open up for a new platform for communication where arch enemies can meet in dialogue. Gil & Moti do not think that the submissive position stands in the way of creating a relationship based on respect.


“It is a symbolic action we carry out that challenges the firmly cemented identity patterns. Gil and I have been brought up to fear our nabour the Palestinians. But by using art as a tool for creating new communication platforms, we can suddenly open up for new ways of regarding the opponent,” says Moti, whereupon Gil takes over:


“We believe that if you give something, you will also get something in return. Here in Copenhagen we have put ourselves in a very unartistic position, where we have been on our knees scrubbing toilets. It has been a position that has brought us very close to a few individuals, and which has made them open up their hearts.”


The potential of naivety

Gil & Moti have chosen the work situation as their artistic starting point, as it contains a clear and simple reference point to the power relationship that many Arabs accommodate to.


“It is in the work situation that the position of the Arabs in society is made visible. Through work the Arabs are able to enter other countries. They are in a position where they have to accept the jobs  available to them. We have wanted to comment on this state of things, and we do it through exaggeration and naivety,” says Moti.


Even though Gil & Moti do good deeds for a vulnerable exposed minority in Denmark, they have no intention of acting as social workers. They work with a limited capacity as base, where they constantly think of the final artwork. 


“When we enter a shop and offer a favour to a person who is a stranger, we are very aware that we are performing and that we are exhibiting ourselves. We are always accompanied by a third eye, the camera, that documents our actions and we have a specific artistic goal that we work toward.”


It is this artistic result that Gil & Moti believe will be able to change the prevailing discourse between Arabs and Israelis. Art should be used for changing societal conditions, they believe.


This attitude is considered naive within the art world, say the two artists, who themselves are proud of their naivety, as it is one of their most important artistic tools:


“Our art project is naive by definition. We do not wish to engage in politics or move country borders. Our naive attitude towards the possibilities of art is part of our performance that is supposed to force people to open up for new discourses and viewpoints. The naivety can be useful in escaping the habitual thinking and as a strategy to create new relations,” says Gil, and Moti takes over:


“Art should be used for communicating and in reacting in a world that is in a state of war. Art can be a voice with a social role in society.”
